Learning to Play Hockey

Free hockey day a success

Earlier this month, area youth had a chance to learn how to play hockey.  Parents, coaches and other volunteers helped each child suit up so they could experience the coolest sport in Hagerstown.

Each year, USA Hockey organizes a Try Hockey For Free weekend.   Ice rinks across America are given the chance to invite new kids and families to the sport.  This helps to grow the sport and introduce the concepts to those who never skated before.  This is especially beneficial for families who have never played hockey, and do not want to buy all the gear to just try it.

"We had a really good turnout, dozens of kids tried hockey for the first time," said Chad Ziegler, the Hockey Director for the rink.  "The volunteer support was very appreciated.  We had many volunteers help the kids get sized for equipment and dressed, and youth hockey coaches assisted them with some basic on-ice instruction."
