Former Washington Capitals player Paul Mulvey stopped in to surprise the girls' Learn to Play program earlier this month. Mulvey, a Caps' Ambassador, is one of several former players that promotes the growth of youth hockey in the DMV.
Learn to Play is a program sponsored by the National Hockey League. Players receive free equipment if they register for an introductory hockey program at a participating rink, like Hagerstown Ice & Sports Complex.
"This Learn to Play event was special, in that it was designated as a female-only experience," said Hockey Director Chad Ziegler. "Our past Learn to Play events were held for all children ages 5-9 but, due to interest by local girls, we were able to offer this female-only session."
Learn to Play participants learn the basics of skating and puckhandling, with several experienced coaches on the ice to facilitate the event and provide small group instruction.
Thanks again to the Capitals and Mr. Mulvey for sharing this unique experience with our local youth!
