Recent news featuring our favorite sled hockey team

The Hagerstown Kodiaks, our region's first sled hockey team, had an eventful May.  They participated in the annual Washington County Gives fundraiser, which saw them collect over $6,000.  In past years, the team would organize a Sled-a-thon, from which individual donors would pay a set amount for every lap a certain team member skated around the ice.  A dollar a lap sounds reasonable... until some players flew around the rink and skated 50-70 laps in an hour!

This year, Captain Mike Barnhart organized a different type of event, titled "Head-On-A-Sled."  It allowed various businesses in our region to send a corporate employee to try sled hockey.  "This was a great way for some local friends and sponsors to come out and see what sled hockey is all about," Barnhart shared.  "They found out pretty quickly how difficult the sport can be."

Many participants chimed in, as well.  Some said they "used muscles they didn't know they had," and had a new appreciation for the level of difficulty that sled athletes face on the ice.  All were grateful for the opportunity and enjoyed supporting the team.  Check out some of the fun they had in the images below.

The Kodiaks are also hosting a fundraiser on Saturday, June 19, called the Kodiaks Kruze-In.  It is sponsored by Spicher's Appliances, and promoted by WQCM 94.3 FM.   The car cruise will be held in the parking lot behind Spicher's Appliances on Pennsylvania Avenue in Hagerstown, from 9am-noon.  There will be giveaways, 50/50, judging of cars, a Gas Grill  you can get tickets for, a drawing, music, food and you’ll want to bring the kids by to meet Kody the Kodiaks Bear!

Come check out some cool cars and support the Kodiaks!
