Frequently Asked Questions

figure skater

Who Should I contact?

If you have any questions about getting started, start with our Skate Director, Delsie McCoy.  She can help to answer any questions you have about our programs, whether you are looking to get started or an experienced skater.

Where should I begin?

At Hagerstown Ice & Sports Complex, we have group lessons for all ages and abilities. Participants ages 4-6 who have never taken lessons should register for SnowPlow 1. Participants ages 7 and up who have never taken skating lessons should register for Basic 1. For skaters with some experience, the Skate Director or one of our coaches can assist in selecting the appropriate class.  Our coaches assess the abilities of the participant and can move skaters to a different level if needed.

What should I wear?

Wear warm and comfortable clothing that allows easy freedom of movement, including gloves. Snow suits restrict movement so athletic wear, layers, and a jacket work best. Longer thin socks are better than thick bulky socks which might bunch and cause blisters. We recommend all-sport helmets for everyone, especially beginning level skaters. Helmets are required for all skaters 6 and under.

Do I need my own skates?

Rental skates are included in the cost of the lesson.

Who will teach my lesson?

Hagerstown Ice & Sports Complex has a highly qualified Professional Coaching Staff. Each coach is a member of these organizations that are recognized worldwide: Ice Skating Institute (ISI), US Figure Skating, and Professional Skater's Association (PSA).

How will I advance?

Each student will be evaluated on the first & second day of class to ensure that the class level matches the student's ability. Skill achievement tests take place on the last week of class. Upon evaluation the instructor will recommend the appropriate level for the skater's next session of class. Through the Learn to Skate program, each skater has the opportunity to continue to advance as far as he or she desires. A skater can master skills to feel more comfortable skating on a public session, or he or she can work towards competitive recreational skating, and more.

Can I register in the middle of a session?

No, as the skater is then behind the rest of the group and catching up can be difficult. However, there are other options.  Reach out to the Skate Director, Delsie McCoy for alternatives.
