HISC brings hockey to Bester

On April 27, several representatives of the Hagerstown Ice & Sports Complex visited Bester Elementary School for their Family Fitness Night.  The purpose of the event was to get the students and their families active while showing them different ways to be active while having fun.

The ice rink provided the hockey sticks and balls for the event.  Chad Ziegler, Hagerstown Ice & Sports Complex's Program Director, provided instruction and encouragement for the kids.  "It was really fun, the kids had a blast," Ziegler said.  "Some played street hockey before and others knew what it looked like from watching on TV.  But for most kids, it was the first time they were able to play.  They were really excited to learn."  As a family event, many parents also participated with their children.  Hockey balls were flying around the gym as the families experienced a unique form of exercise.

Each child received a gift from the Capitals, and some attendees won Capitals' player bobble heads for good sportsmanship.  When the event was over, Ziegler and board member Pete Low fielded questions about youth ice hockey and floor hockey in Hagerstown.  "Many people knew of the ice rink in town, but were surprised to learn that we have an inline hockey rink as well," said Low.

The rink received the hockey equipment from the Washington Capitals to use for events like this.  The Capitals' community outreach program has donated funds to renovate the in-line hockey rink at Fairgrounds Park.  As part of this contract with the City, other schools will receive a set of floor hockey equipment, including sticks, goals, plastic pucks and hockey balls.  Stay tuned for more news about the in-line rink renovation and other opportunities for WCPS students to play floor hockey at their school.
